I never thought I would ever do a no sugar added challenge (to top it off it was my idea 💡)
I’ve never really restricted myself from any kind of food before, instead I focused on just training hard so that I could burn it all. Up until a couple years ago it all worked out, but since I turned 40 I have found that my body just isn’t cooperating with me anymore!!!
Taking on this sugar challenge has really shown me just how addicted I am to sugar. Prior to this I have always considered myself more of a salt person.
A couple things that I have had to change:
Anybody who knows me knows that I’m a big coffee drinker. Prior to embarking on this challenge, I had taken my coffee with 2 milks and 2 sugars. I drink about 4 to 5 coffees a day. A teaspoon of sugar amounts to just over 4 grams of sugar. Those coffees which I had taken for granted add up to 40 grams of sugar. Now that I’m just having my coffee with 2 milks, I found that I don’t drink as much coffee 🙂 anymore. Maybe I was drinking it more for the sugar than the caffeine.
Where coffee was my day time go to pleasure, evening brought it own cravings. This is when I wanted sugar most. For the first years of our relationship Justin and I used to eat 3 or 4 Oreo cookies with milk at night as our treat (it was always within my calories). After a while we evolved from Oreo cookies to something even worse. Once the kids were tucked soundly in bed, Justin or myself used to sneak off to McDonalds and bring us home hot fudge sundaes, ice cream bars or Dairy Queen.
It’s a yummy but very slippery slope.
On a positive note, Ive never been someone who binges, so once I have my treat I’m good and I don’t need to eat more. But sitting here writing this, I find myself really missing my treat.
